Grand Rapids, Michigan
Baby boomer and successful entrepreneur Rick Yarling, President of R.A. Yarling and Company, is ready for another challenge: using his 30-plus years of design, construction/project management experience to help create fully-accessible homes for aging and disabled individuals.
“Of the 72 million households in the United States, 34 million of these are baby boomer households. And, in the next ten years, it’s estimated that boomers will influence two-thirds of consumer buying decisions,” says Yarling. “This active, savvy group is growing in age and in numbers – which is why we thought the timing was perfect to develop this business concept.”
A natural extension of Yarling’s highly regarded hotel project management/consultant company, the newly founded Access Design Associates will provide residential design solutions to boomers who want to continue living independently regardless of potential future disabilities.
Over the last 10 years, Yarling has consulted with owners and managed renovations related to over 170 American’s with Disabilities Act Title III audits at hotels throughout the nation. Simply put, the company advises owners of areas of non-compliance and develops capital expenditure plans to facilitate necessary improvements/renovations.
“Currently some sort of disability affects 25 percent of the general public and with an aging boomer population and numerous veterans returning home, those numbers are going to increase. My goal is to incorporate everything I have learned about the ADA Act Title III into designing private residences – without making them sterile or utilitarian,” says Yarling.
Access Design Associates will offer solutions to homeowners who are looking to renovate an existing residence. Additionally, the company will provide new residential design solutions and consult on multi-family projects.
